PVH Chairman and CEO Emanuel [“Manny”] Chirico has been appointed by UN Secretary-General António Guterres to the United Nations Global Compact Board. The UN Global Compact’s mission is to mobilize a global movement of companies and stakeholders as a force for good to create a better world. With more than 9,500 companies and 3,000 non-business signatories based in over 160 countries, it is the largest corporate sustainability initiative in the world.
“I’m honored to be appointed to the Board of the UN Global Compact, a group whose mission aligns with my philosophy that business leaders have an obligation to take a stand on the pressing issues we face as a global society,” said Chirico.
Comprising 24 representatives of business, civil society and other stakeholders from around the globe, the UN Global Compact Board plays an important role in shaping the strategy and policy of the initiative, which acts as the United Nations flagship for responsible business action.
“We are delighted to welcome Emanuel Chirico as a new Member of our Board,” said Lise Kingo, CEO and Executive Director of the UN Global Compact. “With his wealth of experience in driving sustainability in the private sector, Mr. Chirico will be a valuable asset as we work to mobilize a global movement of sustainable companies and stakeholders to create the world we want. I look forward to working with Mr. Chirico over the coming years.”
Throughout his career, Chirico has made philanthropy and corporate responsibility key pillars of how he works, leading PVH’s historical commitment to conducting business responsibly. Chirico recognizes the opportunity to positively impact people and the environment against a backdrop of financial growth.
Building on PVH’s long-standing commitment to Corporate Responsibility (CR), Chirico introduced PVH’s new Forward Fashion Corporate Responsibility (CR) strategy at the 2019 Copenhagen Fashion Summit earlier this year. The strategy, which is informed by the UN Sustainable Development Goals, includes 15 CR targets to move the company toward the goal of improving 1 million lives in its value chain, 100% positive impacts and reducing negative impacts to zero.
Launched in 2000, the UN Global Compact guides the business community to advance UN goals and values through responsible corporate practices. The UN Global Compact works with companies everywhere to align their operations and strategies with 10 universal principles in the areas of human rights, labor, environment and anti-corruption.
This appointment complements PVH’s announcement last week that it joined the Fashion Pact, a coalition of more than 30 global fashion companies that have pledged to reduce the environmental impact of the fashion industry. Partnership with likeminded organizations and businesses is an important element of PVH’s overall approach to CR.
